Team Georgia starts quickly, beats Canada

Good offense, great pitching and excellent defense.

Team Georgia got all three in its opening game of the 2019 Sunbelt Classic and rolled to a 7-1 victory over Canada Friday afternoon at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Okla.

Pitchers Liam Sullivan (Marist), Leo Giannoni (Wheeler) and Kyle Hilton (Savannah Christian) combined to allow just a run on two hits. Meanwhile, the Team Georgia offense made the most of its seven hits.

Jimbo Brown (Bremen) had a two-run single to highlight a four-run second inning. Brown scored on a passed ball in the inning and Will Pearson (North Oconee) scored on Britt Metts' (Jeff Davis) sacrifice fly.

Sullivan struck out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings and allowed just an earned run on two hits before being relieved by the side-armed throwing Giannoni. The Wheeler High standout worked 1 1/3 innings of relief, including pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth. Hilton worked a 1-2-3 seventh.

Team Georgia added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Carter Holton (Benedictine) and Mikal Mascarello (Statesboro).

Holton finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Ty Floyd (Rockmart) went 2-for-2. Pearson finished with a single.
