Team Georgia holds on to beat Mississippi

Britt Metts (Jeff Davis) may want to take a trio of his Team Georgia teammates out for a steak dinner sometime Saturday evening.

With Team Georgia clinging to a one-run lead and the tying running 90 feet away, Metts induced a ground ball that second baseman Liam Sullivan (Marist), shortstop Tyler Andrew (Lowndes) and first baseman Paul Hegeman (Glynn Academy) turned to preserve a 4-3 victory over Mississippi Saturday morning in Day 2 of the Junior Sunbelt Classic at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.

Starter Colin Caldwell (Harrison) worked six strong innings to earn the victory. He allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, then hit a batter before leaving with a 4-1 lead. Will Pearson (North Oconee) took over and allowed an RBI single before Metts entered with the bases loaded.

Metts got Mississippi's Sam Bianco to ground into a fielder's choice which scored a run to trim the lead to 4-3, before getting the 4-6-3 double play to help Team Georgia improve to 2-1 in the standings.

Team Georgia will meet unbeaten Team Missouri later Saturday night at McAlester High School's Mike Deak Field. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. (CT).

Reid Robertson (Pope) scored on William Lybrook's (Westminster) sacrifice fly in the third inning to give Team Georgia a 1-0 advantage.

Then in the fourth, Patrick Hollman (Ola) had an RBI single to make it 2-0, then Robertson's two-run single later in the inning scored Holloman and Ty Floyd (Rockmart) for a 4-0 advantage.

Caldwell was strong, allowing three runs on five hits to earn the victory. He struck out eight and walked three.

Robertson led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Floyd finished 2-for-2, while Andrews and Hegeman also added singles.
