Team Georgia beats Colorado, 9-5

After jumping on Team Colorado in the first two innings to take a commanding lead, Team Georgia had to hold on to post a 9-5 victory Sunday night at McAlester High School's Mike Deak Field.

It was the only game of the day for Team Georgia, who improved to 3-2 in the Junior Sunbelt Classic standings. After rain pushed the start time back some three hours, Team Georgia didn't seem to mind.

Leadoff hitter Reid Robertson (Pope) drew a walk to start the game and a batter later, scored on William Lybrook's (Marist) RBI single to give Team Georgia a 1-0 lead.

After starting pitcher Ty Floyd (Rockmart) shut down Colorado in the bottom of the first inning, Team Georgia took the lead for good in the top of the second, pushing seven runs across the plate to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Team Georgia used a sacrifice bunt from Dylan Garner (Pike County) to score Garrett Gainous (Cairo) for a 2-0 lead. Gainous had singled to lead off the inning. Then Team Georgia got RBI singles from Robertson, Paul Hegeman (Glynn Academy), Carter Holton (Benedictine) and Tyler Andrews (Lowndes).

Colorado scored two in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 8-2.

But Robertson, who finished 4-for-4 to lead the Team Georgia offense, cracked a solo homer in the third to make it 9-2. Robertson also finished with two RBIs.

Colorado chipped at the lead, scoring a run each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. They had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh before Pierce Williams (Alexander) pitched out of the jam.

Holton finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Gainous went 2-for-4. Will Pearson (North Oconee) and Jimbo Brown (Bremen) also had singles.

Team Georgia will play Team Texas Monday at 11:30 a.m. (CST) in McAlester before playing its final game in Wilburton, Oklahoma at Eastern Oklahoma State College under the lights Monday night against Oklahoma Gold at 7 p.m. (CST).
