Team Georgia whips Oklahoma Gold

Mikal Mascarello helped Team Georgia climb back above .500 in the Junior Sunbelt Classic standings. And the Statesboro High standout did it in a big way.

Mascarello finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs including a solo homer to help Team Georgia beat Oklahoma Gold 8-2 Monday night at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton to improve to 4-3 in the standings. Team Georgia made their final trip to EOSC of the 2019 Junior Sunbelt Classic a memorable one, finishing with a 3-1 record in Wilburton.

Team Georgia will play its final two games at McAlester High School's Mike Deak Field on Tuesday as well as Wednesday's finale. They will meet Arizona Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. (CST), then follow that game by playing winless Oklahoma Blue at 2 p.m. (CST)

Mascarello gave Team Georgia 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Oklahoma Gold rallied to take the lead in the top of the third at 2-1, capitalizing on three errors in the inning.

But Mascarello's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth gave Team Georgia the lead for good.

RBI singles from Patrick Holloman (Ola) and William Lybrook (Westminster) made it 5-2 in the fifth, before Will Pearson's (North Oconee) RBI double and Mascarello's RBI single made it 7-2.

Team Georgia added an insurance run in the sixth inning. After Britt Metts (Jeff Davis) doubled, Reid Robertson's (Pope) RBI single made it 8-2.

Strong pitching also contributed to the victory. Starter Reid Fagerstrom (Northgate) allowed two unearned runs on four hits in five innings of work before yielding to reliever Leo Giannoni (Wheeler), who allowed just a hit in two innings. Giannoni worked a 1-2-3 seventh to preserve the victory.

Robertson finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Garrett Gainous (Cairo) finished 1-for-3 with a double.
